Yunnan Mao Feng, Chinese black tea with amazing scent, sold by She Fang tea store from Scotland, is a very nice version of tea that got over-exploited.
I ran across She Fang tea store earlier this year and I was really interested in their teas. With quite standard assortment, one might think there is not a lot to expect, but how wrong would that be. She Fang cares about its teas in a way every good tea shop should. Let’s go back to our tea.
Name: China Yunnan Mao Feng Superior
Tea Vendor: She Fang (Scotland, UK)
Type: Chinese black tea
I remember the time when I bought Yunnan Mao Feng from one local tea shop almost two years ago. Full 50 grams and the package is still almost full. The tea was generic, quite bad and I developed even a bit of aversion towards Yunnan Mao Feng. Luckily, there is always some tea shop that makes me rethink.
Yunnan Mao Feng Rediscovered
Dry leaves look very nice, with very fresh live color, dark brown with yellow buds. They are long, unbroken (and this is only a sample), twisted. Scent is beautiful, fresh and chocolaty. Place it in a heated teapot and your nose will be full of chocolate scent. Scent is very strong, intense, mixed with heavy sweet ripe scent. Amazing, both visually and in scent. Price is 7,30 GBP for 50 grams or around 9,60 USD.
Brewing it Again
Brewing: 95 degrees Celsius, 5 grams, 150 ml of water, 45 sec, 60 sec…
I love how She Fang rejected typical descriptions and decided to turn tea into poetry. After all, tea is an art. Leaves smell amazing after the first steep. Deep honey with spicy and tiny citric notes in the background. Color is brown to orange, and scent is quite light, but full, and very refreshing. Yunnan Mao Feng is a great every day tea. With second steep spiciness is getting stronger and honey is weakening. It weakens elegantly, slowly and with dignity. It doesn’t have even one trace of bitterness and it very easy to brew.
This Yunnan Mao Feng is very full, aromatic and nice. It’s a perfect example of a good every day tea. Not too overwhelming, not too weak, just the perfect average. Like it a lot.
